Title: Bridget Jones' Diary Release Date: 2001 Cast: Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant Synopsis: Girl loves her cad boss (Hugh Grant, did he need to act for this role, ya think?), but also comes to love the less suave Mark Darcy (nice reference to Pride and Prejudice). A romantic comedy about a neurotic British gal who just wants to take control of her life and get the decent man she deserves. Favorite Quotes: "What I'm trying to say is that I like you Bridget... just the way you are." Why We Love It: Bridget is the epitome of a desperate single woman destined for spinsterhood but finds her man. Just gives girls like us something to hope for. Plus, the sharp British humor and engaging talent of the cast (Hugh Grant!) makes for one of the better romantic comedies. |
Title: Empire Records Release Date: 1995 Cast: Liv Tyler, Johnny Whitworth, Ethan Embry (former cutie Ethan Randall), Rory Cochrane Synopsis: An employee of a record store (aptly called Empire Records and "open 'til midnight") discovers its potential sellout to a music chain and starts a campaign to "Save the Empire." In the midst of the mayhem is the store's preparation for an appearance by the perv-y former teen idol Rex "Sexy Rexy" Manning. This movie is very ADD-y with many characters and different things going on, most important is AJ (Hottie Whitworth) and his unconfessed love to Corey. Favorite Quotes: "Damn the man" "Shock me, shock me, shock me with that deviant behavior" Why We Love It: Smoldering Johnny Whitworth in an argyle sweater playing a lovestruck artist. Oh the music and memorable lines were good too. |
Title: Ferris Bueller's Day Off Release Date: 1986 Cast: Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara Synopsis: Ferris (Broderick, as though you didn't know) decides to skip school and brings along his girlfriend and unwitting friend along for the ride (literally in best friend Cameron's dad's Ferrari). Mayhem ensues including Ferris joining a Chicago street parade and thwarting his nemesis, his high school principal. Favorite Quotes: "Buulleer? Buulleer?" "Save Ferris". Why We Love It: Matthew Boderick is beyond cute as the charming and hilarious Ferris. The movie is funny and smart, leaving us rooting for Ferris and wishing a ditch day could be so cool. |
Title: My Dog Skip Release Date: 2000 Cast: Frankie Muniz, Kevin Bacon, Luke Wilson, Diane Lane Synopsis: A really simple and sweet story about a boy growing up in a small town during World War II . He receives a dog for his birthday and thus begins their adventure from childhood to adulthood. Favorite Quotes: "I was an only child, and Skip was my only dog" Why We Love It: Or why Karen loves it: Frankie Muniz in his first role, before the "Malcom in the Middle" awkward puberty thing. Anyone who has ever owned a pet will totally relate to this movie. Christina laughs at me (only because Karen's eyes get watery when she says the word "Skip"), but it's really good!! |
Title: Never Been Kissed Release Date: 1999 Cast: Drew Barrymore, Michael Vartan, David Arquette, Molly Shannon Synopsis: Geek to the core Josie Geller goes back to high school in order to write a story for her newspaper, the Chicago Sun Times. Cringe as you watch her befriend Leelee Sobeski and swoon as she falls in love with English teacher Sam Coulson (Hottie Vartan). Favorite Quotes: "I'm not Josie Grossie anymore!" "Are you in special ed? No really, are you?" "Are those shorts or a skirt?" "They're gaucho pants. I got them on sale." Why We Love It: Michael Vartan, Michael Vartan... and did we mention Michael Vartan? The movie elicits laughter and embarassment/sympathy for Barrymore and almost makes us wish we could go back to high school. |
Title: Princess Bride Release Date: 1987 Cast: Robin Wright (Penn), Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, and everyone else who was famous in the 80's Synopsis: A sweet story about a "farmboy" and the lengths he would go to to be with his one true love, as told by a grandfather to his grandson (Kevin Savage in his cute years) without all the "mushy love stuff." Favorite Quotes: "As...you...wish"... Why We Love It: Because it's the fairy tale we all grew up watching...over and over again |
Title: Reality Bites Release Date: 1994 Cast: Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller, Janeane Garafolo, Steve Zahn Synopsis: Generation X through the eyes of Lelaina and her three "slacker" friends. What happens after college and what happens when you have to choose between Ben Stiller and Ethan Hawke. Favorite Quotes: "You look like..." "A doilly", "He's the reason Cliffs Notes were invented" "I even dream about it. Only in my dreams, I'm not me: I'm a character on "Melrose Place". I'm the HIV/AIDS character. I move into the building and teach everyone that it's okay to be close to me. And then I die, and everyone shows up at my funeral, and they're all wearing halter tops and chokers." Why We Love It: Winona Ryder with cute hair. Ethan Hawke as her sensitive grunge romantic counterpart ("All we need is five bucks and some good conversation" awwwwww). This movie makes us feel better about being slackers, and hopeful that we will prevail and end up with Ethan Hawke (darn you Uma for quashing our dreams). Director/writer/co-star Ben Stiller does an amazing job and leaves us wondering why he doesn't do more stuff like this. Also, the soundtrack is pretty awesome, "My Sharona" and the infamous Lisa Loeb song. *swoon* |
Title: Say Anything Release Date: 1989 Cast: John Cusack, Ione Skye Synopsis: Lloyd Dobbler decides to ask the high school brainiac Diane Court to a high school graduation party. He breaks all the high school hiearchy laws in doing so, and ends up falling for her. Favorite Quotes: "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen" "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or... process anything sold, bought or processed, or repair anything sold, bought or processed, you know, as a career I don't want to do that." Why We Love It: John Cusack at his cutest and sweetest. He proves that nice guys do exist and don't finish last. The scene with Lloyd and the boombox playing "In Your Eyes" is heartbreaking. |
Title: Shrek Release Date: 2001 Cast: Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow Synopsis: The anti-fairy tale. A green ogre just wants to be left alone, but in order to keep his home, needs to rescue a princess with the help of a loud-mouthed donkey. Favorite Quotes: "Not the gumdrop buttons!" "Men of his stature are short in supply" "How about parfaits? Everyone loves parfaits. Cakes have layers too." Why We Love It: Because it's a fun adult-friendly cartoon that pokes fun of the Disney franchise and never, ever breaks out into cheesy songs |
Title: Sixteen Candles Release Date: 1984 Cast: Molly Ringwald, Michael Schoeffling, Anthony Michael Hall Synopsis: Samantha's family forgets her sixteenth birthday in the midst of preparation for her sister's wedding. Teen angst for Samantha, invisible to her family and to the hottest guy in school, Jake Ryan. Or so she thinks... Favorite Quotes: "Make a wish Samantha" "It already came true." Why We Love It: 80's John Hughes teen comedy, what else is there to say? This is one of the best in the Hughes collection. Michael Schoeffling is hot as the "it" guy that Samantha pines for and Anthony Michael Hall as the "Dweeb" is perfection ( Did anyone just get a flashback of Chandler from "Friends" saying "dinner would be perfection"? Anyone? Anyone?). |
Title: Wedding Singer Release Date: 1998 Cast: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore Synopsis: Robby Hart is an 80's wedding singer obsessed with marriage, though the notion doesn't work too well in his own life when his fiance, Linda "You're a bitch", leaves him at the altar on the big day. At least he meets the love of his life Julia, only to discover she's engaged to another man. Bummer. Does he ever get the girl? Title: Wish Upon a Star Release Date: 1996 Cast: Katherine Heigl, Danielle Harris, Don Jeffcoat Synopsis: "Nerd" sister Haley wishes to be like her "elitist" older sister Alexia. Her wish comes true when they switch bodies and are forced to live out each other's lives until the big formal dance. Yippee, a dance! Favorite Quotes: "Is that stubble?" "The next time you say that you love me? Pretend it's for the first time okay?" Why We Love It: Because it's a cute movie about sisters and we love stuff with high school formals. |
